Member Spotlight: Michael Maturo, President of DYAMI Architects

Updated: Oct 19, 2023

In the vibrant realm of architecture, where creativity intertwines with technical mastery, Michael Maturo stands as a beacon of inspiration. As the co-founder and President of DYAMI Architects, based in the charming Chestnut Ridge, New Jersey, Maturo has carved an indelible niche in the industry, with a particular emphasis on hospitality projects.

DYAMI Architects was originally established in 1984, but it wasn't until 2005 that Maturo's vision was realized, and he purchased the company. While the firm adroitly handles corporate, retail, and medical projects, it's the world of hospitality that truly ignites their passion. This sector offers a unique canvas where design creativity and technical complexity harmoniously coexist. Within the realm of hospitality, projects can span from intricate technical undertakings, such as facade or roof replacements, to high-level design endeavors that prioritize the guest experience.

Yet, Maturo’s journey into the architectural world is a tale infused with personal history. It all began with a family connection – his grandfather's perpetually unfinished house upstate. This intriguing, incomplete structure became the backdrop of Michael's childhood, unveiling the raw beauty of construction and architecture. This early exposure served as the cornerstone of his future career, kindling his fascination for the art of building.

Guided by this early fascination, Maturo's passion for architecture blossomed during his high school years. His pivotal moment arrived when he seized the opportunity to enroll in architectural drafting courses. It was then that he decided to devote his life to the captivating world of architecture.

His educational voyage led him to the City School of Architecture at CCNY (City College of New York), where he pursued both his undergraduate and graduate degrees. This enriching experience equipped him with the essential knowledge and skills required to embark on his architectural odyssey.

At DYAMI Architects, the approach is profound and insightful. Their mission is to craft spaces that resonate with a brand's identity, offer operational efficiency, and enchant both employees and guests. In the realm of hospitality, where storytelling and personalized experiences take center stage, Maturo's philosophy shines. He staunchly believes in embracing the creative freedom that each project's scope offers. Maturo's is a proponent of crafting solutions that are finely tailored to the client's history and vision, fostering a unique narrative for every project.

"Architecture is a multifaceted field that blends design, technical expertise, and a deep understanding of clients' needs," Maturo asserts. "Every job is different, and every client is different," he continues, a sentiment evident in DYAMI's diverse portfolio of projects. One project that truly stands out is the MC Hotel in Montclair NJ. This boutique hotel presented a unique challenge with its triangular site, zoning constraints, and the imperative to create a compelling brand story. Michael's adept team masterfully balanced these elements to deliver a memorable and innovative hospitality experience.

When it comes to style, Maturo places paramount importance on authenticity. Rather than imposing a signature style, he believes in comprehending the project's context, purpose, and the client's unique narrative. Each project should be a bespoke response to these elements, culminating in spaces that deeply resonate with people on a personal and emotional level.

In terms of sustainability and eco-friendly designs, Maturo offers a perspective that is integral to his design philosophy. Sustainability, in his eyes, is not a separate entity but an intrinsic part of good design. Sustainable practices are, at their core, a codification of timeless design principles. Architects have long aspired to create spaces that are efficient, functional, and environmentally responsible.

For aspiring architects, Maturo's advice is invaluable – pursue your interests with unwavering tenacity. He encourages budding architects to envision themselves in their future careers and work backward. The key is to wholeheartedly explore one's architectural passions, as there are countless specializations and markets to be discovered. The fundamental principles are to invest effort, adhere to good design practices, and to never waver in one's chosen path.

DYAMI Architects, led by Michael Maturo, thrives with a team of approximately 15 talented individuals. The firm operates across New York and Florida, holding licenses in 20 states, offering the flexibility to serve clients across a wide geographical expanse.
